Scaling & polishing

Why is Scaling & Polishing Important?

Over time, your teeth are exposed to things like food, tea, coffee, and tobacco — all of which can lead to staining and discolouration. More importantly, tartar can start to build up, which may lead to gum recession and gum disease, and in serious cases, even tooth loss. Scaling and polishing removes this tartar and helps bring your teeth back to their natural colour. It also gives your dentist the chance to spot any early signs of issues like cavities or tooth decay.

How Does The Dentist Do The Scaling & Polishing Procedure?

During your appointment, your dentist will use specialist tools to gently remove plaque and hardened tartar (also known as calculus) from your teeth. This is done using vibrations that loosen the build-up without damaging the tooth surface. Once the scaling is complete, your teeth will be polished to remove surface stains and leave them smooth and shiny. This is done using a soft rubber cup that spins and applies a special paste called Prophylaxis — it’s a bit like toothpaste, but designed for professional cleaning.

Does Scaling & Polishing Hurt?
