Orthodontics

Braces are a common treatment used to straighten teeth, often recommended for children between the ages of 7 and 14. The treatment involves attaching small metal brackets to the front of the teeth, which are connected by thin wires. These wires are gradually tightened over time, applying gentle pressure to guide the teeth into a straighter, healthier position.

The length of time braces need to stay in place varies from person to person, depending on how much adjustment is needed. After an initial examination, our team will explain everything clearly and let you know what to expect throughout the treatment.

What to Expect When Getting Braces

Your first consultation will involve a full assessment to determine how much movement is needed. This typically includes X-rays, impressions, and moulds of your teeth to help us plan the best course of treatment.

Fitting the braces involves several steps:

  • A special etching solution is applied to the surface of the teeth to help the brackets stick securely.
  • Each bracket is then attached to a tooth using strong dental cement, which is carefully hardened in place.
  • A thin arch-wire is threaded through the brackets and secured with small elastic or metal bands. These help to gently move the teeth into the desired position, correct open bites, or shift the midline.

After the braces are fitted, it’s normal to feel some discomfort or soreness for the first week or two as your mouth adjusts. You may also notice some pressure or sensitivity after routine adjustments. Don’t worry — this is completely normal, and our experienced team will be there to guide you and keep you comfortable throughout the process. And when the treatment is complete, the results will be well worth it!

How to Look After Your Teeth After Braces

Once your braces are removed, you’ll need to wear a retainer to help keep your teeth in their new position. This gives the bone and gums time to settle and stabilise around your straightened teeth.

The length of time you’ll need to wear a retainer varies from person to person, but your dentist or orthodontist will give you clear guidance based on your individual needs. Unlike braces, retainers are removable, so you can take them out when eating or cleaning your teeth — just make sure to wear them as advised to maintain your results.
