Crowns

A dental crown — sometimes called a “cap” — is used to cover a damaged tooth, helping to restore its shape, size, and strength, or to improve how it looks. Crowns are shaped to match your natural tooth and can be made from metal, ceramic porcelain, or a combination of both.

When Are Crowns Required?

A crown is usually recommended when most of the tooth’s surface is damaged, but the root is still healthy. It’s often the best option in situations like these:

  • The tooth is too worn to repair with a simple filling – This can happen from years of use, grinding your teeth at night, or enamel wearing away due to acidic food and drink.
  • Decay has left too little healthy tooth for a filling to hold – If the area of decay is too large, a crown can be used instead to cover and protect the tooth, and it can also improve the shape or appearance.
  • To strengthen a weakened tooth – If a tooth is at risk of cracking or breaking, a crown can provide extra support and help prevent fractures.
  • To hold a dental bridge in place – When replacing a missing tooth, a bridge is fixed between two healthy teeth. These neighbouring teeth are fitted with crowns, which help to securely hold the artificial tooth in position.
